It was officially announced at the press conference held at TV Tokyo today that a new TV anime adaptation based on Yoichi Takahashi's long-running soccer-themed manga series Captain Tsubasa is set to premiere in April 2018.

The original manga series was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 1981 to 1988, then compiled in 37 tankobon volumes. It has been followed by many sequels and spin-offs, and the latest installment Capatin Tsubasa: Rising Sun has been running in the publisher's Grand Jump since 2014. It was previously adapted into TV anime three times: Captain Tsubasa (128 episodes/1983-1986), Captain Tsubasa J (47 episodes/1994-1995), and Captain Tsubasa (52 episode/2001-2002). The 4th TV anime will retell the manga story from its beginning.

Toshiyuki Kato (Maria Watches Over Us, Level E) directs the new TV anime alongside series composition writer Atsuhiro Tomioka (Inazuma Eleven) and character designer/chief animation director Hajime Watanabe (Kaleido Star, School Rumble). David Production (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) works on anime production.

The main voice cast are all renewed as below:

 Tsubasa Ozora: Yuko Sanpei

 Genzou Wakabayashi: Kenichi Suzumura

 Taro Misaki: Ayaka Fukuhara

 Ryo Ishizaki: Mustumi Tamura

 Kojiro Hyuga: Takuya Sato

 Roberto Hongo: Katsuyuki Konishi

“Captain Tsubasa is the passionate story of an elementary school student whose thoughts and dreams revolve almost entirely around the love of soccer. 11-year-old Tsubasa Oozora started playing soccer at a very young age, and while it was mostly just a recreational sport for his friends, for him, it developed into something of an obsession. In order to pursue his dream to the best of his elementary school abilities, Tsubasa moves with his mother to Nankatsu city, which is well-known for its excellent elementary school soccer teams.

But although he was easily the best in his old town, Nankatsu has a lot more competition, and he will need all of his skill and talent in order to stand out from this new crowd. He encounters not only rivals, but also new friends like the pretty girl Sanae Nakazawa and the talented goalkeeper, Genzo Wakabayashi, who shares the same passion as Tsubasa, and will prove to be a treasured friend in helping him push towards his dreams. Representing Japan in the FIFA World Cup is Tsubasa’s ultimate dream, but it will take a lot more than talent to reach it.”
